November 9th, 2018 — Allison Says Yes
She knew it was coming. We'd talked about it months before, she'd designed the ring, and she knew the ring was finished. Allison knew I was going to ask her to marry me. And somehow, I had to surprise her. I had to surprise an insanely perceptive woman, who already knew it was coming.
I had to do it fast, before she'd expect it. It needed to be full of light, and love. And us.
First, us. I compiled some of our favorite photos; memories of our relationship, our trips, and our laughs.
Second, the ring. I snuck downtown to the jewelers on a lunch break, terrified that I'd run into Allison.
Third, an accomplice. I needed someone to perform the setup while I distracted Allison. My sister, Kristin, was a god-send. I planned out the layout of the proposal, and took pictures for her to use as reference.
While I took Allison to a concert with my dad and brother, Kristin completely redecorated my living room, laying out more candles than I'd ever imagined having in one place, and setting up letters to spell out the question.
I brought Allison back to a previously messy living room, now lit up with candles, and roses... and music. Allison's music followed us throughout the house, among the candles, the photos, and the words:
Will you marry me?
